In September 2024, CSIC launched an innovative new service in its digital repository that allows authors to request reviews from Peer Community In (PCI), an external review service. The development was undertaken by Arvo Consultores, a registered DSpace provider, as part of the COAR Notify Project. PCI is an internationally recognized initiative based in France that offers reviews, recommendations and publications of scientific articles, which enhances the validity and visibility of research. The new development allows CSIC researchers to request peer reviews from the PCI scientific community directly through the repository.
This new service responds to a growing demand in the global scientific community to be able share their research more openly and rapidly with their peers. The service uses the COAR Notify protocol, which defines a standard way of communicating across repositories and peer review services. You can find more information about this initiative on the official COAR Notify web page.
COAR Notify, which is now available in in DSpace versions 7.6 and later, establishes the format and nature of the standardized messages exchanged between systems, allowing all repositories who adopt the technology to participate in the growing number of overlay publishing initiatives.
Thanks to this integration, CSIC researchers can, with the click of a button, request peer reviews from the PCI community when depositing a preprint in the CSIC repository, digital.CSIC, with more than 300.000 items. This allows them to obtain not only a rigorous evaluation, but also – if the evaluation is positive – a public recommendation that endorses their research.
With this launch, CSIC reinforces its commitment to scientific innovation and transparency in review processes, presenting itself as a leader in open access and high-quality research.
The presentation of the service was held at the CSIC facilities on September 10, and a recording of it is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QclrDwRfak.
